Angie Gomez Horta, MA, LMHCA

Associate Mental Health Counselor

How I work:

When working with clients, I honor stories, identities, and experiences and create a collaborative space where my clients can show up authentically as themselves.

I am empathetic and intentional in getting to know each client and ensuring the space between us feels safe enough for the vulnerable work of therapy. From there I’ll help us bring curiosity and self compassion as we work to identify the different pieces that might be at play as we sort through what is most helpful for you.

Relationships and our connections drive so much of development over our lifetime, however, the relationship we often work on the least is the one with ourselves. Yet, this just might be the most important one. I love helping clients develop a more grounded relationship with themselves and seeing that ripple affect across their lives.

My work is highly individualized, but often includes unpacking some of the harmful cultural messages rooted in perfectionism, diet culture, and oppressive systems.

“Perfectionism is not self-improvement. Perfectionism is, at its core, about trying to earn approval and acceptance.”. - Brené Brown

Specialties:

I specialize in working with eating disorders, intuitive eating, trauma, and mood disorders. I enjoy working with Latinx, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and immigrant communities.

Here are some other foundations of my work:

  • Health at Every Size (HAES) and Intuitive Eating: These philosophies are about getting out of the cycle of dieting, acknowledging body diversity, and finding more nuanced and personalized definitions of health.

  • Psychotherapy: I have experience working with many different evidence-based therapies, the ones I use the most in my work are ACT, attachment theory,

RO-DBT, Mindfulness-Based (MBCT), Trauma-Informed, IFS, Narrative, and CBT.

  • Advocacy: I practice advocacy in my work and outside of it. I continue to approach this as a learner, consistently aiming to further my awareness, challenge my biases, and identify systemic barriers. With this, I integrate an anti-oppressive lens into all of my therapeutic work.

Growing up as a first-generation Mexican immigrant on a rural island in Alaska and around my family’s restaurant, relationships and people have always been a pivotal part of my upbringing. I am a bilingual Latina who loves continuing to practice her Spanish.

Outside of my work, you can find me exploring the outdoors, reading at coffee shops, cooking, and spending time with my loved ones.

What is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate?

The LMHCA license is a pre-license that all clinicians get after they complete their graduate clinical counseling degree. Angie has her LMHCA which means she has completed her graduate degree and internship. She has been working in the field (so yep, she’s not brand new to this!), and she’s on her way to completing 3,000 post-graduate clinical hours and receives supervision and consultation from more senior clinicians while she does this.

Angie is supervised by Carol Missel, LMHC & Grace Lautman, LMHC
